I felt it was time to knock out a new lingerie set for myself, something classy to go under all the plaid I have been wearing lately. The weather is heating up but because it’s Melbourne we’re still experiencing some chilly days so I can extend the plaid wearing where I can. Plaid really is for winter but I guess nobody knows when it’s underneath your clothes.

Do you like the brown and gold plaid (woven) teamed with the black stretch satin? I used my faithful Elan 645 bra pattern which I worked on perfecting the fit earlier this year. You can never have too many bra and knicker sets especially when they’re tailored to your exact measurements; comfort and support quickly become the first thing you appreciate when sewing your own.

So, yes naturally the woven has been turned on the bias for stretch both in the bra cups and knickers. The bra’s bridge is stabilised and lined with a soft black stretch netting. This set is too big for my mannequin which is a size 6 I’ve pinned it back so it looks flattering and the knickers don’t look like a size 12 nappy.

The back of the knickers are black stretch satin with mesh side inserts.

I’m really happy with this set. She looks very classy on and the fit is perfect.

Underwire of course finished off with a velvet bow and gold complementary button. Pretty with a side of rock’n’roll!

God damn I have been feeling seriously uninspired lately, do you get like that? I hope it doesn’t last for too long it’s kind of worrying me, nothing sewing-related seems to be exciting me lately, both online and in my own sewing space I wonder what this means. I’ve laid off Pinterest for a bit because that place can seriously wipe you of all creativity as much as inspire you, it’s a weird thing, it can become all-too overwhelming I think. I have lost my sewing mojo once before but nothing like this. I guess it’s to be expected. I have however been spending lots of sewing-time with my daughter teaching her bits and pieces which has been wonderful and so much fun, she’s catching on and like me loves to express herself through clothes and there’s no better way to do so when you can sew them yourself. A skill for life.

While this set turned out great and I’m so pleased with it, I don’t want to repeat myself when it comes to talking about the construction…Boring! if you want to know more about the construction of the Elan 645 I have sewn it a couple of times before and I may have talked more in-depth about fitting so feel free to check my lingerie category. Otherwise, I feel I’m just repeating myself. The best place to visit for all things ‘bra-sewing’ is Amy’s blog- Cloth Habit. So good. In the meantime I’m off to find my mojo.

Happy Days and happy sewing.

  • Love it! I hear you on the uninspired thing, too. I’m exactly there, exactly now. I have a line up of things I’ve planned to make — materials all in order, etc — and all I can think is “meh, why bother.” I tend to think it’s a phase, but I also wonder…what’s next? How can I drive this phase into the NEXT phase which will be something better? Something different? Because I don’t want to just cycle this round and round…

    So. What’s next?

  • Lurv it!! I have some stretch plaid in my life and have eyed it for the same reason. :D Now, I just need to find the time to sew!

  • I’d LOVE to be able to sew my own bras right now because my boobs keep changing size. When I get time (!) I’ll do it!

What about a field trip together for inspiration!? I need a kick into sewing mojo as well… would love to catch up!

  • Anne:

Aww… I’m a sucker for underwear! And this set is gorgeous.
I exactly know what you mean about pinterest and inspiration online. There are days when I see so much new stuff and think: What a great idea, I have to try this. And then there are those other days when I just think: Yeah, I have seen this all before. Everything has been done. Meh…

  • Kazz:

Exactly! I’m just getting bored. A bit of fabric shopping and a good challenge should kick me back into gear, but for now, the best thing to do is just let it ride out.

  • Kazz:

Lovely Adri, I cant find stretch plaid in the stores here, so bias cut it is. When you have the time to sew your set will look smashing :) Good luck lovely.

  • Kazz:

When your boobs stop changing you will be hooked on making bra’s.

I’d love that, and I’d love to meet bubs too, that sounds great. I’ll get back to you soon, I have a couple of busy weeks with the kiddies then I’m free xxo

  • Kazz:

Hi Anne, thank you. Glad you understand where I’m coming from. For me it’s probably best to just set your sites on a project and see it through to the end without distraction.

  • Karen Scott:

Perfection as always, Kazz. I can never get over how professionally sewn they are, I can never seem to get a finish like that, ever. Not to mention how fiddly they must be to sew yet there is never a stitch out of place :-) You’re very clever!

  • hope you gonna fins your sewing mojo soon.. i’ve lost mine several times, so i know just how you feel.. and this lingerie set is fabulous, i never make ones like it (i do make knickers, but i hardly ever wear a bra, so i’ve only made a few of them, and these were just the simple ones, no underwire and stuff like that)

  • Kazz, these are FIERCE! The more plaid the merrier I say especially when it is this fab! Hope the creativity hits you again- I totally agree with the Pinterest thing. It’s good to be inspired but you can be totally overwhelmed.

  • You always have the best combinations of print! I love this plaid and lace set!

  • I love this set and how you used many different fabrics and trims to put everything together but it all works. I feel like that it one of the hardest parts of bramaking – making sure the fabric, trims, and notions go together.
Hope you’re sewing mojo comes back!

  • This is a great lingerie set! Pretty but bad-ass.

  • This really is lovely :) You’re totes inspiring me to get on the lingerie make but think I need a bit more sewing under my belt.
