Simplicity 6435

Had I lost my mind this week? did I really buy plaid taffeta? Did I really attempt to do pintucks on the plaid taffeta? Did I really manage to do all this before the weekend? I did, and I have never been so scared, apart from the first time I went into labor and gave birth, yeah that was hellishly scary. I have never sewn this gorgeous little dress pattern— Simplicity 6435 (1966) I picked her up from my very good and closest bestest friend Etsy, have you met her? she’s wonderful isn’t she? I bet she’s your best friend too, she’s a bit of a floozie spreading the love like she does— yes yes anyway, so I was really taking my life into my own prematurely ageing hands attempting this challenge, which is by the way based on plaid/tartan this week.

So here’s me just dead chuffed with the outcome, the pintucks were relatively easy the fabric wasn’t half as bad as what I imagined it to be; I was however, really worried about the taffeta wrinkling, she’s prone to wrinkles just like me if I sleep on my side. So I did a bit of research and found that lining the skirt in organza will ease the wrinkles, I wondered the same if I lined my face in the stuff, would it do the same job? You know what? I think the organza does ease the wrinkles— in the skirt that is. The organza was a total nightmare, I read that using a lightweight double-sided tape helps keep it stable. Ha! who would of thought!

So I slapped on some lippy, slipped into the dress, threw on my hat and gloves for a speedy photo shoot. When I looked at the photo’s on the monitor I noticed I didn’t quite pick up the pintuck. God damn! I just don’t have the time to fix it just now so I will call this dress ‘The Wounded Pintucked Taffeta Tartan Dress’ A mouthful hey? you’ll get use to it. It looks like my body almost wants to exit through it, ha, I’ll fix her tomorrow, but for now, lets just march on.

Look, apart from this little mishap I adore this dress, the colour is stunning the pattern matched up perfectly at the seams, the organza is doing her job, the collar was a dream to install and, I have a fabulous new dress.

I’m just ecstatic can’t you tell? Pintuck shmintuck. Have you sewn with taffeta? How was your experience with it. She frays a lot doesn’t she? I like how it moulds, you know what I mean? I once spied a Vivienne Westwood plaid dress at her exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia I almost fainted, there were metres and metres of plaid taffeta spilling out all over the floor from the mannequins body it was D R E A M Y.

Anyways me lovelies I have got to run I’m up to the last chapter of this fab book and I can’t wait to finish it. LOVED IT.

Happy sewing xxoo

  • Esz:

The dress looks great!! Love those colours – That’s the good thing about plaid, you’ve got a lot of colours in there you can match your accessories to. Yay!!

Taffeta frays huh? I’m planning a dress to wear to a friends wedding and I can’t decide on silk taffeta or shantung. It’s for a summer wedding though so I don’t know…maybe something lighter like crepe de chine…I mean, look at all the pretty colours! http://www.nyfashioncenterfabrics.com/gensym-12.html
(I haven’t ordered from this site yet but I’m positively drooling over all the gorgeous fabrics at reasonable prices – even if you factor in shipping).

  • Gorgeous, shiny, checky – what’s not to like? I do like a fabric that behaves itself – (let’s ignore the fraying bit) it looks like it could stand up on its own. Neat!

  • Debbie:

She is indeed gorgeous – love the styling too. Isn’t it great when a project turns out to be easier than expected!

  • Debi:

Kazz–this is AMAZING! I really have been dying to sewing with tartan taffeta–it looks so lovely and has that really nice taffeta sheen. This tartan is really glam too! I love it!!!

  • Its so you. I love that you put your stamp on everything. Im still trying to work out what mine is… if I ever get one! Hats off to working with Taffetta. I haven’t tried yet but I can imagine its a pain. Don’t American sewists speak of ‘fraycheck’. I’m sure I’ve heard it mentioned in a blog or two. I might investigate further before I get brave enough to use such gorgeous fabric. I love your posts Kazz. Keep em coming!

  • Kazz:

Oh I remember that Ally she looked fabulous didn’t she?? xx

  • Kazz:

    Thanks again Debi

  • Kazz:
