Yesterday was Labour Day here in Melbourne so we decided to make a day of our already jam packed weekend by visiting the historic Melbourne City Baths situated smack bang in the middle of town, first opening in 1860 where the men and women’s facilities were segregated even down to separate street entrances. In 1947 they introduced mixed bathing which then increased the popularity of these majestic walls.

A spot of reading and a picnic after the kiddies finished their swim were what we had in mind.

Inside is so clean and the noise is minimal. The walls were lined with framed newspaper articles and photographs from bygone days.

Oh if only these walls could talk, imagine the swimwear fashions and conversations that took place here in the 1940′s 50′s and 60′s!

and just over the wall peeks the bustling, bubbling streets of fabulous Melbourne.

The aerobic room is bursting with orange and yellow walls trimmed with slick black glossy window frames with the ceilings rich in decorative detail.

We strolled through Fitzroy Gardens enjoying the sun and sat and nibbled on our picnic lunch in the best city ever.
