I’ve just cracked open my new Moleskine and have just listed my goals for 2012. It’s not a long list at all it’s a simple list of personal goals. Last year I joined Sew Weekly and started participating in the challenges, 44 garments all up so this year I would like to complete a garment a week for a whole year. I think I can manage that and perhaps push myself to try different sewing techniques and hopefully get outside more with my camera to take outfit shots. I’ve just got to get my hubby to learn to hold the camera still and straight. Tee hee.
Sew Weekly’s format has changed this year and in doing so there has been a massive influx of sewing contributors from all over the world committed to sewing a garment a week for a year. Watching the first challenge go up for 2012— ‘show your favourite sewn garment from 2011‘ was epic, I had no idea after spending most of 2011 uploading my weekly creations that there were so many people willing to contribute this year it’s so exciting to watch I can only imagine what the creator Mena Trott must be thinking. I think there is a sewing blog phenomenon taking place, they seem to be popping up all over the place it’s brilliant my Google Reader is about to burst. Who knows what 2012 will bring!? I’m excited and have a head full of superstylin ideas I want to share with you. My fashion sewing brain never sleeps.
The second challenge of the year is to make an outfit to suit an accessory/accessories. Hello!! I am an accessory stand, I have hat boxes full of the stuff, you can never have too many hats, shoes, bags and bangles right? I chose the accessories pictured above because I’m on a wood and turquoise kick this week I chose this tie dyed silky sateen or satin because of the colour and feel, it feels amazing, I feel like wealth wrapped in it.
Why complicate things, simplicity is key here. Suggested fabrics: chiffon, georgette, anything light weight that drapes magnificently.
This is how she drapes in the silky sateen, the perfect throw-on over swimmers.
This is how she drapes belted up which I prefer.
I am amongst the 13 Australians committed to Sewing Weekly and we are the 2nd highest country worldwide doing so, how awesome is that? My Sew Weekly post will appear on Mena’s site first and then I’ll post here as a run down so I’ll be writing more this year which I’m looking forward to. Here is my Sew Weekly post along with all the lovely comments already posted, the supportive community over there are the bomb. If I manage to get a spotlight position believe me, you will hear me holla from every social network I’m currently connected to.
Here’s me on the front page of Burdastyle.com handpicked from all of the hundreds of garments uploaded monthly. Chuffed? indeed.
Everything I post on Sew Weekly also goes up onto my Burdastyle, so if you don’t follow Sew Weekly you can add me on Burdastyle, we can talk bobbins, seams and fabric bolts if you like, and finally, you can get a small glimpse of some daily goings on through the Photo A Day link just up there on the right of my blog. I have my Instagram connected to my Tumblr. I am seriously excited about this year, the busier I am the less time I have to think about the silly and the mundane. Stay tuned for my weekly posts, each garment will be named after a song. This one! The Inbetween Days Dress. Can you guess it? Here is to an epic 2012 I’ll see you at the other end.
Do what you love, love what you do and put it where people can see it!
Happy Sewing.
